Do you use group tabs in Lotus Notes?

In Lotus Notes, you can group your opened tabs by groups.  You can enable groups tabs in the preferences tab:

The result is your tabs will now be grouped under a single tab with a number.  Then, you can click on the down arrow to switch between the tabs:

  1. I use it…. just wish when I moused over the tab (with more than one window) it give me the drop down, that way it would be one click to swith tabs, which is the same as the single tabs

  2. I do not use it, but would if it were improved.
Like Richard says, it should not add a click to my life just to see the list. As it is now, I have to click to see the list then read thru them to see which one I want to go to.
Second thing to change is keep the X for closing a tab on the tab itself. If you don’t use groups, the X to close is on the tab.
Last thing is a wish list item. Show me thumbnails of the tabs instead of a text list. Using Windows 7 for a bit now and I group the items on the task bar because it is a productivity improvement to see which item I want to go to instead of a text list.

  3. I’m with Richard. It should work on one click and should also be accessible via keyboard which, as far as I’m aware, is a functionality that was removed in the Standard version.

  4. This feature is nice to reduce the number if tabs but I would rather group by a tag. Tab for ProjectX,Tab for ClientY, etc. Tab could have tagged Symphony Docs, tagged e-mails, tagged view, etc. Then give me the option to open all in one tabbed window.

  5. I use it but agree with Brad that having the X visible ON the tab in some manner would be a win. I also agree there are some Windows 7 task bar cues that would be nice, so here is my proposal:

    – Activate grouped tab expansion via a mouseover, with a configurable delay, defaulted to ~400ms. This is long enough that, if all the user wants to do is click the tab grouping to bring in focus, the user won’t be bothered by an expanded tab list, but short enough they won’t start cursing.
    – If the user clicks on the dropdown in a group tab (always visible as it is now) the list is activated immediately.
    – Once activated, the group list would then show an X next to whichever specific sub-tab the mouse was hovering over (just like the Windows 7 taskbar). This avoids the visually awkward display of multiple red X icons in close proximity, and prevents users with poor aim from closing the wrong tab by accident. Key benefit is that user can easily close a specific sub-tab without it first being brought into focus, to say nothing of having to then move the mouse across the screen to find the X in its current location.
    – At the bottom of the tab list would be a choice, in italics or otherwise visually different from other “real” choices, to “Close Group”. There should be an “are you sure” confirmation prompt with a “don’t ask me again” checkbox option displayed.
    – I like the idea of thumbnails instead of simple text, BUT I think it might be too gimmicky, since for example all email messages look the same as thumbnails and it’s the title that really matters. Also it would probably be expensive from a performance standpoint. OK at the OS switching level but probably overkill inside Notes. The existing thumbnail viewer is good enough.

    Thanks for asking 🙂
